How Cold Immersion Can Stimulate Brown Fat
There's three kinds of fat. There's white adipose tissue, which is the subcutaneous fat that you can kind of pinch under your skin. And then there's brown fat, which is mostly found in the upper back and neck and around postural muscles. So when you're cold, that it does increase your body's responsibility to produce heat. But specifically, when you shiver, you produce sucanate. That sucanate then goes and acts on brown fat. When brown fat is active, you're increasing your thermogenic rate.
