CHAPTER

The Effects of Stress on the Prefrontal Cortex

When we get afraid of something and it can be something that's happened to us physically or even just in our mind, we create this survival state where we start secreting epinephrine. So the brain starts going at 100 miles an hour and it wants to know a solution to this particular problem. But there is no solution. We've lost, we've gone into survival limbic brain. And so when you go into your body and you regulate your body first, say you practice the breathing techniques, then the cortisol shuts off, the nor epinephrine shuts off, and you get your prefrontal cortex back.
