Self-Compassion Promotes Mental Wellness

Self-criticism is also experiential avoidance. It's negative reinforcement because you are avoiding the difficult feeling of being vulnerable, not feeling competent. We think that being self-critical motivates us to change, but research shows that it's quite the opposite. When you're self-critical, it's going to lower your self-confidence and increase your anxiety and depression in the long term. But when you practice self-compassion, it helps you take the energy that you would spend and criticize in yourself and put it towards making the changes that you want to make in your life.
