The Ladder of Inference
In psychology, it's called the ladder of inference. You view the world as how you will interpret that experience. If you believe you're invulnerable, life is going to pound on you. That belief won't hold up because life doesn't care about your invulnerability. Some of us reach a place where we think that we're probably on incredibly steady ground. But powerlessness says it's not the insanity of the drink, it's the insanity before the drink.
