Introduction
The dutch east india company was the largest global corporation in the seventeenth century. The company's greatest prize was the spice trade, so lucrative that a hundred years before columbus had sailed west to tryto find a short cut to it. They also brought tea, coffee, porcelain and silk western europe. At one pieace treaty, the british gave up the nutmeg island of run, while the dutch gave up new amsterdam - which they renamed new york.
