No Make Up, Make Up - Is This What Empowerment Looks Like?
Beauty is the preferences that reproduce the existing social order, says sociologist tressy mc millan cottam. Beauty culture tells us that conforming to this ideal of beauty is self love and then proceeds to sipen away your actual sources of power through participation. The no make up look allows me to show up to an event looking empowered, which is to say, looking healthy, youthful and resistant to oppressive beauty standards. Never mind the lengthy application process and the hundreds of dollars i've spent to get that look. This is what empowerment looks like. We are spending them on this surface level look of empowerment instead of actually empowering ourselves.
