The Anchoring Bias

Anchoring is the idea that we are heavily influenced by the initial piece of information we see. Steve Jobs used this tactic to convince was to drop everything and co-found Apple with him. He asked Atari, his employers, for a flight to India but they laughed at him because he had no money. They then agreed to send him to Munich as it would be more reasonable. It's classic anchoring in action - make request seem much more reasonable.
