During the colonial period, families often would hire a wet nurse to live with them. In some cases, they would send the infant to live with the wet nurse and then take the baby back once it had been weaned. It was also extremely common for enslaved people to be forced to act as wet nurses. There was an understanding that making enslaved women nurse their babies would confer some immunity to malaria.
