Euclid was a very good scientist after the 19th, 19th, adding to the eclipse. He knew you could do that. And he had great confidence in the equations. It's an interesting question how the ancients looked at it. The idea of Euclidean geometry lasted for many centuries before people discovered there were other kinds of geometries.
