There is no on the ground Viking story the sources just don't exist we're looking at this entire phenomenon. Once these Vikings get over the horizon after looting someplace they are home free for the most part unless you decide to not leave. The very thing that makes it easy to sort of shoehorn your way into Ireland traps you once you're there. They were both willing and unwilling participants in the never-ending Irish power game.
