In 5K and 10K training, the strides element is absolutely critical. Don't neglect that piece of the equation. Structure your training very similar to how it would look if you were in half marathon or marathon training. The workouts that you do are going to be unique to the races that you're trying to cover. It's not like you're going to suddenly get to take a break from running.
