The Adaptive Unconscious
The instinct when something is really uncomfortable is to try to silence it, but actually the suppression model over time has never worked. Being able to handle discomfort becomes such a critical step in any successful change process. It's interesting too, this kind of brings us back to the idea of the adaptive unconscious because in a lot of ways people come in maybe and they're not quite sure why they're coming. They think it's, well, I'm having panic and I just need some coping skills to stop having so much panic. But really it's there's deeper kind of stuff going on that needs to be addressed.
