The punk movement in the 1970s opened up a new axis that went from professionally cut and hacked about by a mindless kritan. "Axes just did not exist" before the punk movement, says designer John MacIntosh. Designers can think of axes as points at the intersection of cultural abbresses which are very much what you're describing here with solution spaces.
