Nietzsche's view toward religion in human-altic human takes for granted that the scientific revolutions of the Enlightenment have made a transition away from religious thought inevitable. He didn't perceive how much depended on the Christian God, such as, as he says later, our entire European morality. And so there's a curious blending of influences in this book. It's as much a child of Voltaire as Machiavelli and Fontenelle as Thucydides.
