i didn't do many of those tests, so i had an academic education. The purpose of the test is to ramp up the level of exertion until you reach the maximum level of oxygen consumption. It's really a test of what your muscles can do in terms of utilizing that oxygen into your point. And the difference between a very fit person and a non fit person is the fitter you are, the more oxygen your able to consume.
