There is something called the fresh start effect. It suggests that we're more likely to commit to doing something if we say we will do it on a significant date. Katie Milkman helped identify this effect when attempting to encourage her students to study for their exams. Richard Schotten in his book The Choice Factory found that using scarcity in your movie trailer is a powerful way to get people to watch. Take the original Home Alone trailer, for example.
