The History of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece

Olympic games started in ancient Greece in 776 BCE. They were an attempt to bring together city states with very different political systems and religious beliefs into a kind of cosmopolitan competition. The philosopher Heather Reed says that what made the Olympic games so radical was that they encouraged religious tolerance. And for her, the Olympic games are basically the backdrop to the invention of democracy.
