The Importance of Fitness in the 1800s

Fitness as this kind of unqualified virtue that really doesn't exist in American society in a mainstream way until relatively recently like the 1960s 70s it's happening but you're absolutely right. Going back to people who were kind of boosters of fitness in the 1800s or in the early part of the 20th century they are connecting exercise and control of food to discipline. It's no accident that there's a whole movement called muscular Christianity and much of that ethos there was saying that the external appearance of your body and how you care for and discipline your body through exercise is a sign of salvation.
