There are literal overrides built in, which is the engineer saying, there are times you're not going to want to do the default. The override just doesn't happen on its own, but it is built into the machine that allows you to override it when you think is required. So most of the time doing something is better than not doing something. If you're too close to the data, it's like those old paintings where you walk up close to the painting and it just looks like a bunch of dots.
