The scottish army had been taking on a steady stream of recruits that saw their numbers rise to 22 thousand even after the purge. Meanwhile, the english army was being hit by disease and malnutrition to the point where they only had about 11 thousand effective fighting men. By september first, cromwell had retreated to the port of dunbar to maintain access to supplies he so desperately needed. With an overwhelming numerical advantage and pressure from the ministers mounting, leslie decided that if a battle was going to be fought, now was the time to do it.
