It seems to me that if we think about introspection, I think introspection often works when you're genuinely looking for the root of why you're doing a thing. If you're doing introspection in a social setting where you're having to explain yourself to another person, it feels to me it's much more likely to produce these confabulations. We all have all been in positions where telling the complete truth is not exactly the right thing right now. And I would agree with what you say there. It's very context dependent and social context make it much more complex.
