I think it's just because we're all looking at our phones, right? So part of me kind of romanticizes the chance encounters of the pre-smartphone era. One thing that this makes me think of too is a line of research that has found that social trust has actually been declining in the US for decades. People are essentially less and less likely to say that most other people can be trusted.
