The past two years have been really elucidating in the sense that a lot of research has come out. The way things are panning out, for me, the research is starting to reinforce the idea that pushing close to failure is important for hypertrophy. In the past, I may have recommended keeping yourself within three reps of failure on average, at this point, especially with the results of my study coming through, it's looking more like two.
