The Importance of Experience in Decision Making
For me, naturalistic decision making is studies how people actually make decisions. And the reason that's important is that I can do a carefully controlled study of decision making. But in order to get it controlled like that, I have to use an artificial task so that people have never seen it before. So you can do that kind of research, but you're missing something important, which is experience. When I started studying decision making, I didn't study in a laboratory. I said, let me talk, let me find out and see what I can learn from people who do this for a living.
