Counterfactuals are what help us learn from our mistakes. But they're also a byproduct of how we make sense of the world, which is what drives a lot of our biases and misunderstandings. Sometimes counterfactuals can be used just as a way of kind of telling a story that makes the world seem more kind of sensible.
