The Importance of Mindfulness in Meditation

A lot of people's conception of meditation is this concept of stopping the mind from thinking, which you know you can't do because a thinking machine thinks. What you can do is learn to distinguish a thought from a feeling. You just sit and say, okay, I'm feeling sadness in my heart or tension in my belly. But whatever the one that's calling your attention, if you just be with it and allow it then you actually start having a relationship with the very part that's probably giving you the symptoms. This separation is to me unhealthy.
