I'm always prepared to believe a mathematician or scientist because they can say, at three minutes past eleven, on the 23rd of June, in the year 2031, there will be an eclipse here. And I've never heard a priest or a spiritualist ever predict anything like that. Or I switch the switch and the light goes on. It almost seems magic to me, but I know that if I were to study long enough, I would find the chain of reasoning... you have to believe without being shown the working. That may even be one of the drivers of perhaps the most bizarre index of progress, or example of progress, the flin effect.
