As a more experienced grappler, I change my strategy based on who I'm rolling with in order to keep myself safe. If I don't know you super well, I'm playing super defensive at the outset. It is hard to get injured when everything is tight and compact. To get anything going, you need to extend something. Think of a boxer like your default stance? They always tell people: chin down, hands up,. Same thing in jujitsu. You only want to do it because you're trying to generate some force or power.
