Why Do People Care About Their Rank?

Larry samuelson and his colleagues have a nice paper talking about why people may care about their rank. The theory they propose is that back in prehistoric times, it was important to look at what other people were doing before you made your own decisions. An alternative explanation could be that people simply care about getting the job done well.
