Naturalistic Decision Making

CHAPTER

What's the Difference Between NDM and CTA?

"We had a really great level of compliance. So in terms of validating a method, this was a really great sample," he says. "It certainly pushes the usual NDM and focus on CTA as those methods." But you're still getting that sort of lived experience.

Did you follow up if there were major gaps with individuals or did you just use the day they had? Absolutely.
Speaker 2
So thankfully with this study, again, I possibly bring it back to it being the students. We had a really great level of compliance. So in terms of validating a method, this was a really great sample. We had a few individuals from each team, but I mean, if there was 12 people in each group, we probably had at least 10 full diaries back. So it wasn't a problem. We've ran subsequent studies with adult expeditioners and we haven't had quite the same level of compliance with the data collection. So it's certainly something to bear in mind if people are interested in using this

method. Well, it certainly pushes the usual NDM and focus on CTA as those methods. Certainly pushes it well beyond, but you're still getting that sort of lived experience. Did the students, what sort of preparation did you provide to them in terms of what they should be writing, how they should be thinking about providing data?
Speaker 2
Yeah, that's a really good question. So I was lucky enough to be able to go down to the school for a day session with the students to explain to them what it was that we were looking at. So they understood the wider implications of the project. We were also able to assign a student in each team to take the responsibility of trying to check and encourage the team members to complete the diaries at the same time during the day. So obviously, if you had different time points when you were completing it, this could obviously affect the data that we were getting out of it. So yeah, I was quite lucky to be able to have that sort of training experience with them. I'd also add that in later iterations of the diaries, the methods kind of evolved. We've had a bit more of an emphasis on the qualitative element. So again, probably a little closer to some of the more traditional NDM methods. So asking people to write a little bit more about their personal experiences that day and not restricting them may be in a way that the diary before was quite structured. So the method is evolving as we are using

it.
