The Importance of Literature in the Middle Ages

Aristotle wrote his poetics which lays out the principles of what a good play comedy or drama should do. Poetry was always looked at as something that had forms that people could draw from and it was a field of... It was an art and a craft. How did these things get codified then? Who were the gatekeepers? That's an interesting question. I think it really kind of just slowly started to happen largely in the Renaissance.
