The Different Types of Enzymes Responsible for Digestion
Digests in a protein begins in the stomach with hydrochloric acid, bringing that pH right down. That helps to facilitate the activity of various enzymes, which break down proteins into smaller pieces. Proteins are denatured and chopped up into small chains before being absorbed across the epithelial cells and into the bloodstream. The process is even more complex in the case of carbohydrates because it begins not in the stomach but in the mouth.
