Einstein introduced the cosmological constant in 1917 for the wrong reason. He wanted a static universe which was sort of spherical in space, sort of closed up on itself and sort of sat there forever. Einstein regarded this blunder as his biggest to date. And so many things in cosmology that are much better understood with this term work so much better than they did before.
