There are ways to create these kinds of commitments that don't have strict costs. Psychological costs tend to be a little bit less effective on average, because the penalty is lower. But they can still be effective. And there's this experiment where doctors would randomly assign to either just be encouraged not to do this, or a condition where they signed a pledge and put it up in their waiting room. It's another kind of commitment device. It doesn't involve cash but it does involve your reputation, accountability.
