How to Practice Mindfulness on Race Day
Breathing is this information system that will communicate to our minds and to our bodies if we're in a threat state or not. And so often that threat state pre-race pre-training comes from mental appraisal. Our bodies are going to produce stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline in relationship to those thoughts. One minute of slow, deep rhythmic breathing is going to turn off that sympathetic nervous system. It's going to activate your parasympathetic branch of your autonomic nervous system. So what it does is it dampens you down, cortisol, adrenaline, your heart rate evens out.
