Research into the psychology and neuroscience of arguing is only now really making progress toward understanding why we do this. Hugo Mercier has put together a model for explaining why are we so biased? What's going on whenever we have disagreements that involve motivated reasoning? I would love to be able to predict the future, whether that would be through a crystal ball that actually worked or if you get some sort of supercomputer that can take everything that's happening right now and see what most likely will happen in 10, 20 years. But here's something we can do: We can explore problems of the past to find surprising solutions for a better tomorrow. That's the title of it, Build for Tomorrow.
On this episode we discuss the psychology of arguing and interview both Jeremy Shermer and Hugo Mercier. Afterward, I eat an orange chocolate chip cookie and read a news story about reading your partner's mood in old age.
