MI is a positive psychology or asset-based approach. It recognizes this person's probably got all the resources they need to move forward in their lives. Some of the things you're trying to do are to resist the writing reflex, notice any desire to jump in and fix and hold back. Then there's really a big emphasis on empathy and trying to imagine yourself into the other person's shoes. And then towards the end of the conversation sometimes, but not always, you've made a transition to planning.
