The Diaries of Kafka
The appeal for me is still a more literary appeal than it is a personal appeal. What attracts me to Kafka's writing as a whole, including his diaries and letters, is the transformative intensity with which he wrote everything he wrote. He was always kind of developing his literary idiom, his voice, vision, the imagery. I've been tracing for something I'm writing about Kafka, this one image of the knife carving flesh that comes up again and again in their writing.
