Are You Sure That's a Standard Deviation?

Sometimes in a meta analysis, you'll see that the analysts opted to use four different data points from the same group and treat that as if it was just four totally different groups of people. If I ever see an effect size above three in a forest plot, my first thought is, are we sure that's a standard deviation that got put in here? The third one is ignoring within study correlation which might sound very jargony and technical, but it's typically quite simple.
