Interview #48: Why Aren't We Using Hypnosis? (With Dr. David Spiegel)

The Thinking Mind Podcast: Psychiatry & Psychotherapy

CHAPTER

The Cognitive Flexibility of Hypnosis

The main thing you see in experienced meditators is reduced activity in the PCC, which makes perfect sense. It's a little different with hypnosis: We see reduced activity in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. The salience network goes down and that makes perfect sense because if you're not screening for potential threats or something like that, you're more likely to be totally immersed in this focal experience. So what makes hypnosis distinct from meditation is it turns down the activity in a part of the brain that is looking for threat or conflict.
