In the old days, there was actually a printer tape that was punched in order to tell the printer how much light to expose. The modern day printers were RGB and red, green and blue, red, create cyan, dye, blue creates yellow dye and green creates magenta dye. Those dials are on a printer and there's a light source that is separated for each of those colors. And that combination will give you any color that you can imagine variation on variations on how much light you're actually getting.
