In the 1950s and 60s, Skinner did experiments where he put a pigeon in a box. He gave this pigeon a reward every time it pecked at the disc. And so very quickly, Skinner could train the pigeon to peck at the disc if and only if the pigeon was hungry. That's part of the experiment. A lot of people forget the experiment did not work if the pigeon wasn't hungry.
