epictetus imagines the tyrant threatening to chain us up. He says we may respond, you can chain my leg, but you cannot chain my power of choice. Even my body is, on this way of thinking, a dispensable external thing. If he says he will cut off my head, i can shrug and say, whoever said that? My head cannot be cut off.
