Kabnama is set in just before and just after independence and partition. Its set in a village cluster in the north of what is now bangla dish. It's not so much a story or a poem, but an extraordinary piece of writing. The author wrote just two novels in his life. His first novel was called chilecota shepide, the soldier in the attic.
