David Stewart: In 700 AD, the Maya had a lot of pomp and ceremony. He says that in 9th century, there seems to be some sort of social collapse. War, famine or climate change have all been offered as possible explanations for decline. The Maya believed that the major time periods, as they went in their cycles, were times of change and renewal.
