The History of Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners in general have a long and interesting history. A chemist named Konstantin Fallberg who was working with coal tar derivatives discovered saccharin, which was the very first artificial sweetener. He just noticed his hand tasted sweet after working with these coal tar derivatives. So he decided to poke around a little bit and figure out which one actually produced the sweet taste. And it was a chemical called benzosulfamide, which is what we now know as saccharin.
