I often want the end result to tell a story. Part of what I want to do is present the structure of the system in a way that's legible to someone. In some sense, the need to write a lot of documentation is itself the sign of a problem. It forces you to organize what you're thinking. And facing down some reader, be it a reader of code or reader of prose, is largely modeling that person in your head and the effect that that modeling has on the thing that you're trying to produce.
