Pathogenic Variant and Variant of Uncertain Significance
A pathogenic variant is the preferred term for what we used to call a genetic mutation. If you have such a mutation or a variant in a gene that is associated with breast cancer, a person who has that germline sequence can have elevated risk for breast cancer. This is different than a variant of uncertain significance where it's not necessarily known to be associated with a higher chance of getting cancer.
