The Evolution of the Human Brain
There is an evolutionary continuity, right? Yes, and the book is full of little evolutionary stories too. This is one that sparked my imagination. There was a scientist who worked on Paramecium, Xing Kong was his name. He showed that Paramecia, the single celled organisms, already had action potentials. That is the electrical impulses that neurons have. And it turns out that a lot of components from the impulse activity that neurons have to the spitting out of neurotransmitters by which one neuron talks to another evolved in unicellular animals long before there were nervous systems.
