The Role of Perception in the Brain
The thalamus is the brain's relay station. It determines how much information is going to be channeled to the cerebral cortex for interpretation. The thalamus shuts out info when we sleep, which allow and it allows in more info when we wake up. And being able to gate out certain amounts of information prevents overload of information so that we can think and plan.
